How to Fit a Dining Room into Small Spaces

from:  http://www.apartmenttherapy.com

Rent to Own.ph: Cozy nooks and small tables fit for 4 in your small space can make for a fabulous entertainment area!

www.renttoown.ph

Whenever we ask readers why they don't entertain more often, lack of space inevitably crops up as a recurring reason. Although space can definitely limit the types of parties you host (it might not be a great idea to have a kegger in your studio apartment), it shouldn't keep you from inviting smaller groups of friends over for a dinner party. Here are five ways to make room for a dining table, even if you live in a few hundred square feet.

www.renttoown.ph

1. Try a round table: A compact round table usually seats more people than a rectangular one, and it can fit into tight corners. Kens' table (shown in the first photo above) is an extra-space-saving vintage Danish modern Hans Olsen dining set.

2. Make a surface do double duty: Fold two (or three) spaces into one — a bar countertop can easily double as a dining table.

3. Use a folding table: In Emily and Meeko's apartment, a collapsible table can be put away if they ever need more open floor space.

4. Mount your dining room table: Angela and Tania created a "murphy table" that folds flat against the wall shelving when not in use.

5. Choose an expandable table: Lauren and Stiles have an expandable table, with leaves, that can seat fewer when they're eating alone, but make room for more when they're having company.

Mobile Dwelling

from: http://www.littlediggs.com

Hoover: More on relocatable container homes.

MDU is a 40ft shipping container that has been modified into a relocatable dwelling. The container accommodates several modules for various functions such as cooking, washing and sleeping. These modules sit within the container so that during transportation the MDU largely resembles any other container sitting on a ship or a dock. Once the MDU has been delivered to a site, the modules slide out of the container like extrusions and create an inner hallway in the newly created void inside the container.

Laundry in the Kitchen

Hoover: While travelling across Europe, some of the places we stayed in had their laundry facilities integrated in their kitchens. This is an ideal solution for small spaces such as apartments and condominiums. Read on:

In European homes it's fairly common to find laundry facilities integrated in the kitchen, and yet here in the States the combination is rare. But laundry in the kitchen is a workable and sometimes necessary small-space solution for those who lack the space for a separate laundry room. What are some practical ways to make it work?

We've compiled some of our favorite tips here:

• Consider the top of the washer or dryer as extra counter space. You can install a butcher block or other surface over the top of the machine to make it work.

1.  Floral Wall Art
Extravagant and flamboyant floral wall art is fresh.  There is something refreshing about the beauty of natural flowers (without wanting to sound too flowery).  If you are a person who appreciates the intricacies and fascinations of living world, a large wall painting or print could add that inspirational edge which your bedroom has lacked.  Our personal preference is a professionally hand painted piece, however this comes at a price.  Large prints are an acceptable alternative; so long as what you choose give you an extra bounce in your spirit when you look at it.
The beautiful dandelion example below, to me, speaks something about me and my life.  It is more than a nice looking picture; and this is what to aim for within this trend, which will be a popular one for 2014.

Tumbleweed's Tiny Home

Rent to Own.ph: A house on wheels, this home can stand alone or be taken anywhere the owner wishes!

Great example of how a tiny house plan can start as the base and what can happen when inspiration and invention come into play.
“JT started with the Walden plans, but ended up combining elements of the Lusby, plus some of his own creativity into his finished product. And what a beauty it is. He started with the recommended 18′ trailer but then decided he wanted his home to be an extra 2′ longer. His solution … add 2 feet to the living room. But what about the porch? Well, JT figured that out too. He found some c-channel steel that matched the trailer and had a 2′ section welded to the front so he could add his porch. JT like’s the open feel of the porch and decided to keep it free from posts and railing.”

Transforming Spaces for 420 sq feet

(Life Edited: Graham Hill's Tiny Apartment)

Hoover: Watch how creativity and smart use of space transforms this small apartment into a living abode that feels like it is more than 2x its original area.

Graham Hill's new apartment was designed via a competition through his companyLifeEdited. A couple of goals were to be able to seat 12 people for dinner, and have space for guests to sleep and work. While the actual apartment is 420 square feet, Hill states that it provides the equivalent functional spaces of a 1100 square foot home. It has all kinds of great space saving features that will work in other people's homes — here are a few highlights:
